PAWS For Reflection 4/4/2015

This Saturday, April 11, we will be set up at Ideal Lawn & Tractor (behind the mall in Marion).  They have again asked us to join them for a Customer Appreciation Day.  We will have adoptable animals there for folks to meet and hopefully find loving, forever homes.  Stop by if you’re up that way.

Visit our website, pawspaws.org, or stop by PAWS Place Adoption Center in Anna to find your new best friend forever.  There’s sure to be a sweet furbaby you are meant to find.

PAWS 2nd Chance Resale is offering a number of beautiful dresses and gowns just perfect for the upcoming spring formal events.  Some have never even been worn and are available at a fraction of the cost of dresses in boutiques.  In addition, spring and summer clothing is out.  There are so many items available, and such a wide variety, it is really lots of fun to shop.  Many, many of you have become regular shoppers.  Come visit us soon.

Meanwhile, if you see a companion animal in need, in trouble, or suffering, please, please call someone before it’s too late for them.  Call your local animal control office, the police, the Sheriff’s Dept., and let us know, too.  It IS your business if an innocent being who cannot speak for himself needs your help!

Call or write to us at 139 E. Vienna St., Anna, IL, 62906; ph: 618-833-DOGS (3647); pawspaws.org.  Keep PAWS in mind!

PAWS For Reflection 03/23/2015

Despite the weather, it is spring, and not a bit too early to start thinking about upcoming formal events, especially all our high school proms.  PAWS 2nd Chance Resale is offering a number of truly beautiful, and quite glamorous, dresses and gowns just perfect for those events.  Some have never even been worn and are available at a fraction of the cost of dresses in boutiques.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars, and plan to attend, our Good Friday Fish Fry on April 3 at Lou’s Room in Anna.  It all begins at 5 pm.  Good food, good friends, and a good cause!

The recent news that the Ringling Bros. circuses will cease using elephants in their shows by 2018 is long awaited, and a great victory for one of the most magnificent and wondrous creatures on Earth.  It may not resolve the plight of these sensitive and loving animals in the wild, but it will spare future generations of elephants the brutal and unnatural lives they have been forced to live. Let us hope that the other smaller such outfits will finally take the hint, and follow the example of Ringling Bros. There is a great deal more to say on this issue, but not today.

Visit our website, pawspaws.org, or stop by PAWS Place Adoption Center in Anna to find your new best friend forever.

PAWS . . . for Reflection
an article by Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc.

A brief story by Karee, PAWS Board President:
It was early Saturday morning, after a night spent stroking the head of a poor, pathetic little pug, that  used the bit of energy she had mustered to scoot her head close to mine and give me a big “smoochie”!  You see, this dear, sweet little dog came to us the evening before, literally covered in fleas and so badly emaciated that we could count every bone in her body.  She was too weak to stand or even lift her head.  The fleas were sucking the life right out of her and it looked as if it had been a long time since she had known the feeling of a full tummy.  Penny and Cathy wasted no time removing the fleas to give her any chance at survival. The fact that she made it through the night seem like a miracle but that “smoochie” seemed to be her way of saying that she was willing to fight to live.  For the first few days, she had to have her head held so she could eat and drink.  And as much time as possible was spent just holding her to make sure she would know that someone loved her.  As I held her, she would look up at me with those beautiful eyes and I feel so blessed to be on the receiving end of the love she was so willing to give. She was just SO pitiful but you could just feel that she was not willing to give up.

The rest of the story is included in our holiday newsletter and in the day to day love and joy this little girl brings to all the lives she touches.  She is our darling Mona Lisa, whom so many of you have met at our store, where she continues her long-term recovery from the horrific neglect she suffered.

Sadly, she is not the exception in the hundreds of animals that pass through the doors of PAWS Place each year.  As you might expect, their recoveries, if they can be saved at all, are not without huge expense to our meager budget.  We are able to save the Mona Lisa’s because of your financial support, and because of the hearts of those who nurse them back to health.

Won’t you help?  In addition to monetary donations that are critical to our day-to-day survival and operations, you can pick up some of the products we use to clean, feed, and care for our babies.  You can shop at PAWS 2nd Chance Resale where there are bargains galore and more items than you can imagine available.

Enroll your Kroger Plus shopping card by logging onto www.kroger.com/communityrewards.  Choose PAWS NPO # 10673 as the organization you want to support. Then, each and every time you use your Kroger Plus shopper card at any Kroger store, you will be helping save a life.

Next, shop Amazon! The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible AmazonSmile items to PAWS!   Here, you can support PAWS by simply logging on to http://smile.amazon.com/ch/37-1341598 to do your shopping. If you have problems with either of these, let us know and we’ll try to help.

And just for fun— according to the American Kennel Club the 5 most popular breeds of dogs in 2014 were: #5 is the Beagle, down from #4; #4 is Bulldog, up from #5; #3 is the Golden Retriever; #2 is the German Shepard, and #1, for the 24th year in a row, is the Labrador Retriever.

Our wonderful labs, yellow, black, or chocolate, are now considered the most popular breed of all time.  To see the rest of the top 25, visit dogchannel.com.

Interesting that four of the top five are large breeds.  Come visit some of our big guys at PAWS Place, and maybe you’ll see why.

Remember to stop by PAWS 2nd Chance Resale to shop for your spring and summer wardrobe updates and spring spruce-up of your home.
